Type the handle you want into the box above and click "Check Availability". Our free X username checker looks it up instantly and tells you whether the @username is available or already taken, so you don't have to go through X's sign-up or settings screens to find out.
If the handle is taken, you'll see the public profile of the current owner, including their display name, bio, verification, and follower count. If it's available, you'll get a direct link to claim it on X.
X Username Rules
Before you pick a new X handle, keep these rules in mind:
- Length: 15 characters or fewer
- Allowed characters: Letters (A-Z), numbers (0-9), and underscores (_)
- No spaces, periods, or symbols: Hyphens, periods, and other punctuation are not allowed
- Reserved words: Handles containing "Twitter" or "Admin" are blocked
- Case insensitive: @JohnDoe and @johndoe are the same username
Your display name is separate from your username. It can be up to 50 characters, include spaces and emoji, and doesn't need to be unique.
Tips for Finding an Available X Handle
- Keep it short: Short handles are easier to remember, type, and mention
- Use underscores sparingly: One underscore can rescue a taken name, but several make it hard to type
- Match your other profiles: Use the same handle on Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms so people can find you
- Add context, not random numbers: A suffix like "hq", "official", or your city is easier to remember than digits
- Check before you rebrand: Confirm the new handle is free on X before you announce a name change
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if an X (Twitter) username is available?
Enter the handle you want in the search box above, without the @, and click "Check Availability". Our tool checks X instantly and tells you whether the username is taken or available to claim.
Can I search for any X username?
Yes. You can look up any X (formerly Twitter) handle. If it is taken, we show the public profile behind it, including the display name, bio, and follower count. If it is available, you can claim it directly on X.
How do I change my X username?
On X, open Settings and privacy, go to Your account, then Account information, and choose Username. Enter the new handle and save. Your followers, posts, and verification stay with your account.
What happens to my old X username when I change it?
Your previous handle is released and anyone can claim it, and links or mentions that used the old @handle will no longer point to you. If you want to keep it, check that it is not needed elsewhere before switching.
Does X free up usernames from inactive accounts?
Not automatically. A handle stays taken while the account exists, even if it never posts. A deactivated account is permanently deleted after its reactivation window, and only then can its username become available again.
Why does my X username show as unavailable?
It is either already in use, longer than 15 characters, or uses characters X does not allow. X also blocks usernames containing "Twitter" or "Admin" and handles that impersonate other people or brands.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes. Our X username checker is completely free, with no sign-up required.
